Douglass Kern is the founder of our entire enterprise. Douglas grew up watching his dad work on cars, and developed an interest in automobiles early on. In 1960, Douglas followed his heart and moved to Milwaukee in search of adventure and independence. Once in the city, he took a job for $1.00 an hour washing dishes, but his passion for auto services remained ever present in his mind. Then in 1963, he enrolled in vocational classes for mechanic work and the rest is history!

Upon becoming a certified mechanic, he embarked on a series of jobs that cultivated and grew his skill set enormously, including work as a Front End Alignment Mechanic at Goodyear (1964), Participant in class training at the General Motors Training Facility (1964), Front End Specialist for Star Wheel Alignment, Exhaust Mechanic at Midas, and Service Mechanic for JC Penny’s in Brookfield, WI.

As he grew through his various jobs, Douglas met some prominent figures on the Milwaukee auto shop circuit including Russ Saks and Pat Steiner of Classic Muffler Shop (which is now owned by Kern's on 76th Auto Sales and Services). Following his passion from the technical side into the realm of business, Douglas built up one of the first minority owned exhaust service business in Milwaukee called Kern’s Muffler Shop. Being a business owned and operated by a minority presented its own set of challenges, but Douglas stood firm in his faith and his belief in his skills and his team, and so the enterprise prospered and bloomed. Today, Douglas uses his long years of knowledge and talent to mentor others, and help a new generation of technicians and entrepreneurs to follow their dreams.
